Links Between Sleep Apnea and Diabetes
There may be a connection between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and diabetes mellitus, according to researchers from Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University.
The researchers presented their at the CHEST 2006 conference.
The study took data from patients referred for sleep studies over a one year period and identified 127 patients with diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. Complications include high blood sugar levels.
The presentation concluded that while the two diseases are independent, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome may contribute directly to this form of diabetes.
