Idiopathic Hypersomnia
Description
Idiopathic hypersomnia is defined by excessive daytime sleepiness with episodes typically lasting for more than an hour. Sufferers typically sleep more than eight hours at night and may report confusion or disorientation when waking up. Some patients may also experience extreme sleep schedules similar to those of a narcoleptic. In these cases, patients may have trouble sleeping followed by hypersomnia, or excessive sleeping.
Diagnosis
This disorder is diagnosed in patients who complain of excessive sleepiness or an inability to stay awake. Patients typically sleep several times during the day as well as sleeping at night. The onset of this disorder almost always occurs in those under 25 years old. No other mental or physical disorder is responsible for the symptoms. Severe cases impair the patient’s involvement in work and social situations.
Treatment
All hypersomnias are generally treated through medication, paired with proper sleep hygiene which includes avoiding alcohol and caffeine, getting daily exercise and maintaining a normal time to sleep and wake-up. Prescribed medication can include amphetamine, methylphenidate and other stimulants.
