Hypnogenic Paroxysmal Dystonia
Description
Also known as nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia, this disorder is characterized by attacks of abnormal movements resembling a seizure during non-REM sleep. These movements generally last between 15 to 60 seconds.
Diagnosis
Sufferers will experience awkward movements during sleep, and consequently may have trouble sleeping. These symptoms are only noticeable during certain times.
Treatment
When antiepileptic drugs don’t reduce the nightime attacks, surgery may be required.
