Environmental Sleep Disorder

Description

Environmental sleep disorder is associated with patients being unable to sleep because of noise or other distractions from their surrounding environment. This most affects those in the city who must deal with noise and poor air quality on a daily basis.

Diagnosis

Patients will complain of not being able to sleep because of noise, light, temperature or other extrinsic nuisances. Patients will feel fatigued and have difficulty concentrating during the day. Once the nuisance is removed, patient’s sleep patterns should return to normal.

Treatment

Once other sleep disorders are ruled out, sufferers should remove whatever environmental nuisance is preventing them from sleeping. If sleep does not improve after such things are removed, patients should examine other explanations for their lack of sleep.
