Menopause and Sleep Problems in Women
June 30, 2008 – A study published in the journal SLEEP indicates that women going through menopause have a great difficulty falling and sleep and staying asleep.
The research was conducted at Rush University Medical Center and involved over 3000 women ages ranging from 42-52 years old and beginning menopause at the time of the enrollment in the study. It was conducted for up to seven years and each of the participants were assessed on an annual basis.
Researchers found that 41% of the post menopausal women reported waking up several times during the night and about 16% of them reported having difficulty falling asleep.
The study also found that Caucasian women are more likely to have difficulty staying asleep. Hispanic women were less likely than other ethnic groups to wake up several times during the night and were less likely to wake early.
