Insomnia and Depression in Older Adults

April 15, 2008 – A study released in the SLEEP found that persistent insomnia in elderly patients may perpetuate depression. Researchers studied 1801 patients who were 60 years old or older who had been diagnosed with mild or severe depression. The study found that patients with persistent insomnia (compared to those without insomnia) were 1.8 to 3.5 times more likely to remain depressed over the course of a year.
