Apnea Linked to Diabetes
April 4, 2008 – Research released by the Ohio State University Medical Center indicates that there is a link between Type II Diabetes and sleep apnea. The studies have shown that those with sleep disorders, specifically obstructive sleep apnea are three times more likely to suffer from Adult Onset Diabetes (Type II).
The upper airway obstruction that occurs in sleep apnea can lead to oxygen desaturation, which increases certain hormone levels such as cortisol which causes increased insulin resistance. Cortisol is responsible for proper glucose metabolism, insulin release for blood sugar maintenance and the regulation of blood pressure.
Having sleep apnea puts an individual at greater risk of developing Type II Diabetes and other serious ailments.
