We keep finding more and more studies that support sleep while in college. College athletes need sleep to help improve performance.

College athletes who get more sleep are more likely to improve their game and their mood, according to this research of six male basketball players at Stanford University.

The players normally averaged between six and nine hours of sleep. In the study they were encouraged to sleep ìas much as possible, then their performance was measured.

Cheri Mah said with the added sleep, all players improved their shooting ability and sprint times. The athletes also reported more energy and better moods during practice and games after getting more sleep. They also said they were not as fatigued.

The Effect of Extra Sleep on Mood and Athletic Performance Amongst Collegiate Athletes by C. Mah, K Mah and William Dement was presented at Sleep 2007, the 21st annual meeting of the Association Professional Sleep Professionals Societies, LLC.
